OUR FAVORITE SWADDLES

Saturday, January 28, 2017

Sleep, precious sleep. I will do anything to get Joseph to sleep. He slept swaddled until he was almost 4 months old. He could not sleep otherwise. Jonathan and I became swaddle experts. We learned which ones were best for tight, long lasting swaddles. Not all swaddle blankets are created equally.

Why is swaddling so great?
It makes baby feel safe.
Their startle reflex is muffled.
Can soothe a baby back to sleep when they awake in the middle of the night.
May reduce the risk of SIDS because they are less likely to end up on their stomach before they're ready.
Prevents face scratching.

So what are the best swaddles? I'm so glad you asked.

Aden + Anais classic swaddles

Pros:
Endless pattern choices
Durable material
47" x 47"
Light muslin
Machine washable
Breathable
Stretchy
Holds swaddle well

Cons:
Not very soft out of the box, takes several washes to achieve super soft feel
Edges curl after wash

We loved our Aden + Anais swaddles for months about 2-3. Since the material is a little more stiff, they held the swaddle really well. They've got some seriously cute patterns. Our favorite has a fox on it! Now we use them as Joseph's every day blankets. We did notice the solid colors tend to be a little softer than the printed ones.

Swaddle Designs muslin swaddles

Pros:
Lots of pattern choices
Muslin
46" x 46"
Machine washable
Breathable
Super soft right out of the package
Swaddle instructions tag sewn into each blanket

Cons:
Material was extra soft, doesn't hold swaddle well for stronger babies

Swaddle Designs ended up being my favorite swaddle. I loved how soft they were right out of the box, and they only got softer! But, the material is so soft that they didn't hold the swaddle well once Joseph got stronger. These blankets were great for the newborn days when he stayed wrapped in a blanket almost all day long. Plus, the swaddle instruction tag on each blanket is what taught me to swaddle correctly - no lie.

Carter's oversized muslin swaddle

Pros:
Super affordable
Muslin
Breathable
44" X 44"
Machine washable
Stretchy
Holds swaddle well

Cons:
Not soft
Smaller than other swaddles

We didn't use these swaddles until the last few weeks Joseph was still swaddled. They held the swaddle really really well. Probably since the material is a little more stiff and rough. I didn't like how these felt for the early newborn days, they are too scratchy. They did get softer after a few washes but not the same as our Aden + Anais or Swaddle Designs. Our guy is pretty small so these still worked well for us up until 4 months. Since they are a few inches smaller than the others, they may not work as well for average or larger babies.
